The Call to Self-Forgetful Otherness

After learning (Php 1:27-30) that redemption in Christ calls us to have a morality that is all about trusting the gospel’s accomplishments, to have a unique set of values that are defined by the cross and empowered by the cross, and having comforts that are uniquely qualified by the cross, we move onto another vital and essential call that comes from the centrality of Christ's provisions. The church that is all about the gospel's centrality must, in and through grace, be passionate about loving and caring for God's people in a manner that is consistent with the gospel. (Php 2:1-4)

After Paul gives us 26 verses of gospel truths, he then transitions to things that the gospel calls us to. So in our verses we are given some clarity as to what a Christian is to do with the gospel realities and perspective of verses 1-26. What we learn is that redemption in Christ calls us to have a morality that is all about trusting the gospel’s accomplishments, to have a unique set of values that are defined by the cross and empowered by the cross and having comforts that are uniquely qualified by the cross. In our passage we see another needed component to understand gospel centeredness. That is, we must have the perspective of what is most central and defining for us and that is nothing other than Christ Himself. In our passage, we are given a majestic presentation of Christ’s exalted place in the church so that we could arrange all other things that are not Him in the proper place. (Php 1:19-26)
